Department of Education Opens Investigation into Liberty University

Liberty is accused of dismissing sexual assault problems, retaliating towards survivors, and forcing LGBT learners into “conversion therapy” plans.


The Division of Education has opened an investigation into Liberty College, a non-public Christian college accused of mishandling sexual assault reviews.

According to Inside of Increased Ed, the department’s Office for Civil Rights is investigating Liberty for alleged violations of the Clery Act.

The Clery Act involves universities to notify sexual assault victims that they are entitled to file reports with normal legislation enforcement.

The Act also obliges academic institutes to disclose criminal offense statistics—including incidences of sexual assault—as a condition of participation in federal financial support courses.

The Office of Education’s investigation seems to have been prompted by numerous lawsuits, which claimed that Liberty usually cast the blame for sexual assault on to victims—in some scenarios, forcing them to go through humiliating morality checks.

In response to the lawsuit, U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) penned a letter to the Department of Instruction, inquiring them to search into survivors’ tales and promises.
